Famous for conducting a parliamentary investigation into the conditions of London prisons. James Edward Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696, in London,
England; he was the tenth and last child of Eleanor and Theophilus Oglethorpe
He devoted much of his life to prison reform in England. He believed that colonies in America could be used to give new
starts to the poor.As a result of Oglethorpe's efforts, King George II in 1732 granted
a charter for creating Georgia and named Oglethorpe as one of twenty-one
trustees to govern the new colony.
Reasons for SettlementThe initial reasons for settlement was to be a defense buffer colony, a place for the Englishman to send the debtors, and lastly, the opportunity for Englishmen to prosper economically when becoming a colonist.
Mary MusgroveMary Musgrove was the daughter of English trader Edward Griffin and a Creek Indian mother. She spoke both English and the Creek language. She was a translator for Oglethorpe and Tomochichi. She helped find Savannah and helped Georgia become a strong colony. She helped make a treaty with Tomochichi to settle Yamacraw Bluff.

The charter was granted on April 21, 1732. The charter was signed by King George on June 7, 1732. The reason for the charter of 1732 was that of Oglethorpe's belief, that he felt the best way for the debtors to find a new way of life was to start a new colony. The charter of 1732 took place in the Colony of Carolina, which stood between the Savannah and the Altmaha rivers extending westward to the Pacific Ocean.
TomochichiTomochichi was the chief of the Yamacraw Indians. He was born in 1644. He gave James Oglethorpe permission to establish a settlement on Yamacraw Bluff overlooking the Savannah River. Tomochichi became Oglethorpe's friend. Oglethorpe respected him so much, he asked Tomochichi to come back to London with him. While in London, he met the King. Upon his return to the colony, he asked other chiefs to allow the colonists to live in the new world and trade with them.
SavannahSavannah was founded in 1773. It was designed by Oglethorpe, Jones, Bull, and Castell. It had square shaped units called wards. Squares served as assembly points and drilling spaces for militiamen.
